Philomene was a princess who was raped by her same sister's husband, Tereus.

After the deed, the man cut out Philomene's tongue, in order to prevent her from telling what happened.

Unable to speak, she wove a tapestry with her story and sent it to Procne, who later on planned with the beloved sister a cruel revenge against her husband.

Aracne was a girl from Lydia, gifted with the ability of weaving. Being so confident about herself, she affirmed she was an even better weaver than Athena and challenged her.

In the end Arachne's weaving was far more beautiful than Athena's own, who enraged by the deed, punished the girl by turning her into a spider, so that webs would have been the only elements she could weave in the future.
